SMG ProductsVision and Strategic Objectives • Vision • SMG Products - “THE standard” within AIAA and beyond • Strategic Objectives • Maintain and grow the level of technical quality of SMG supported conferences and publications • Preserve and transfer critical SMG technical knowledge to the next generation of engineers • Broaden the impact of SMG products throughout the industry • Accelerate the timeline for impact by leveraging the strength of the “Group” working together

SMG Exceptional Service Award • Recognition for outstanding contributions from a TC member (including Chairs) • Normally (but not exclusively) awarded for long-time contributions • Venue for TC chairs and SMG Directorsto recognize their ‘stars’ • Awarded as warranted – with annual calls for nominations • Process highly informal and the final decision is at the discretion of the SMG Director • Nomination consists of an email to SMG with nomination and rationale (Address nominations to SMG Deputy Director for Member Services) • TC chairs and SMG Deputy Directors may nominate at any time • SMG may approve none, one, or multiple awards in a given year • Three SMG Exceptional Service Awards were presented in 2010: Robert Wilson (Technical Program Chair for Space 2009), Carl Ehrlich (Space Transportation TC) and Eric Rice (Space Colonization TC). • Two SMG Exceptional Service Awards have been presented in 2011: Peter Montgomery (TPC for Space 2010, SMG Newsletter Editor), Grant Anderson (Public Policy)

TAC Updates • Basil Hassan became the new VP-TAC in May • Tom Duerr appointed Deputy VP • Basil’s Vision/Goals for TAC: • Strategic look at program committees – realize the impact they could have at conferences • Revitalize conferences • Strength relationships between TAC and Staff • AIAA Finances • The gap between revenue and expenses is improving, but a challenge remains. • Challenged to consider what we are doing that is not critical to the profession, and what we should stop doing.

TAC Updates • IT Services - Tammy Marko – New IT Dir. • IT upgrading AIAA phone system (>5 yrs old) • All conferences on ScholarOne and 5/7 journals • Email feedback – S1-Events@aiaa.org • ScholarOne document placed on SharePoint site at https://info.aiaa.org/SC/TAC/Shared%20Documents/Forms/AllItems.aspx • AIAA BoD approved new AIAA.ORG website • Better look/feel, better navigation, better search, improved analytics, content personalization, and mobile device capabilities. Single sign on will also be available. • The new website should be completed in Fall 2011.

  10. TAC Updates • Public Policy • Public Policy Committee has been tasked with creating a public service award for inside the Aerospace community. A lecture is attached to the award. PPC needs help to identify candidates. • CVD 2012 issues currently being finalized • Constitutional Change • A constitutional change was approved during the recent election changing the term of AIAA President to two years. • This begins with Mike Griffin – AIAA Pres.- elect

  11. TAC Updates • Conferences • AIAA and IAF to co-organize the Global Space Exploration Conference (GLEX 2012) from 22-24 May 2012 in Washington DC. Peter Montgomery representing AIAA on the Program Committee. • StratTac and Missile Sciences co-locating in 2012. • Aeroacoustics with Fluids et al co-locating in 2014. • New event - Systems Integration – Transition of former T&E Days. Kick-off event with Space 2012. • New AIAA Event Model under discussion

AIAA New Event Model AIAA discussing a new conference event model Providing a full systems overview by bringing together multiple conferences is the focus Space 20XX is a likely candidate focal point Discussions only with no final decisions yet Discussions have included how to preserve the “smaller conference feel” of many meetings Tiger Team co-lead is the SMG Deputy Director Stay tuned for more details at future meetings

Summary • Major changes coming with AIAA events, and SMG is well positioned for a leading role • Continue to set an example within SMG, AIAA, and industry • Increase collaboration with other SMG TCs / PCs • Involve the next generation at every opportunity • Become an agent for positive change within SMG, AIAA, and industry! • Keep up the great work!
