Anatomy • Extensor pollicis brevis • Abductor pollicis longus
Mechanism of Injury • The cause of DeQuervain’s disease remains idiopathic (arising spontaneously or from an obscure or unknown cause).
Symptoms • Pain, tenderness, and swelling over thumb side of the wrist • Difficulty gripping • Finkelstien’s test
Treatment • Surgery • Palliative treatments include a splint to immobilize wrist and thumb to the interphalangeal joint • Anti-inflammatory medication
Recovery • Physical therapy focuses on lifting mechanics • Sometimes prescribes splint
