  2. Concerns, questions, worries • On your piece of paper write down three concerns, questions or worries you have about Paper 1. • At the end of the day return to this piece of paper. Do you now know the answers/ feel less concerned or worried? • If there is anything you are still not sure about – discuss with your teacher in class this week.

  4. Paper One is a written commentary • What is a commentary?

  5. From the IB Guide • “Literary commentary” refers to a close reading of a passage. • Students need to explore aspects such as content, technique, style, structure, theme and language • Assessed on ability to: “ demonstrate understanding of the thought and feeling in the passage through interpretation that is supported by detailed references to the passage” and “analyse and appreciate how the passage achieves its effects” • A good commentary explains and analyses, rather than summarizing content or listing effects.

  7. Choice of 2 extracts • 1 poem • 1 prose Standard Level – 1 hour 30 mins. Two guiding questions provided. Higher Level - 2 hours

  8. SL – Guiding Questions • Two questions provided - one on understanding and interpretation, and the other on style. Students are required to address both questions in their answer. However, it is anticipated that students may also explore other relevant aspects beyond the guiding questions in order to achieve the higher marks.

  9. What do I do in a commentary? • In any kind of commentary, you need to demonstrate that you: • Understand the text • Can identify and comment on literary features—as well as their purpose • Organize your ideas into a coherent piece of writing

  10. You’re being assessed in four areas • Knowledge and understanding • Appreciation of the writer’s choices • Organization (HL: and development) • Language

  11. Knowledge and understanding How well does the student’s interpretation reveal understanding of the thought and feeling of the passage? How well are ideas supported by reference to the passage?

  12. Appreciation of the writer’s choices To what extent does the analysis show appreciation of how the writer’s choices of language, structure, technique and style shape meaning?

  13. Organization (and development) SL: How well organized and coherent is the presentation of ideas? HL: How well organized, coherent and developed is the presentation of ideas? What does coherent mean? From the syllabus for HL: ‘All commentaries should be continuous and developed; commentaries comprising unrelated paragraphs will not merit a high achievement level.’

  14. Language How clear, varied and accurate is the language? How appropriate is the choice of register, style and terminology?
