Fort Sumter • April 1861 - Attack on Fort Sumter. Anderson offered to surrender, but only after he had exhausted his supplies. His offer was rejected, and on April 12, the Civil War began with shots fired on the fort. Fort Sumter eventually was surrendered to South Carolina.

France • The French wanted influence in Mexico, and it would suit them if there was a new nation, pro-French, in between Mexico and the USA.
Britain • The British increasingly saw the USA as a fast-growing economic rival, and were not displeased to see it divided. Also, some of the older Tories still thought the American Revolution was a bit of cheek, and looked forward to a bit of 'trouble in Paradise'.
