He is not well known to many Koreans, but he has done much for Korea’s modernization and independence. He first came to Korea at the age of 23 in 1886 to teach English at the Royal English College set up by King Gojong. In this school, he tried to establish modern educational system. He introduced various subjects such as English, history, natural science, geography and mathematics. He was a true admirer of Hangeul. He wrote many articles in Korean and he tried to spread the excellence of Hangeul to the Western world. He introduced his studies on Hangeul in the report of the Smithsonian Institution in 1903. In the report, he said “Korean is better than English as a language for public speaking.” It was the first report about the excellence of the Korean language known internationally. He also helped Korea gain independence from Japan. He was named as a special envoy of Gojong. He traveled to Washington and Hague to inform about the unjustified rule of Japan. After going back to the U.S., he kept doing lectures and writing articles criticizing Japan. He came back to Korea in 1949 after the independence of Korea.
