Guatemala’s Civil War lasted over 30 years, ending in 1996. “Experts blame the war on persistent government corruption, U.S. backing of repressive regimes, widespread poverty and discrimination towards people of Mayan Indian ancestry.” Guatemala’s Violent Peace by Robert Gilbert March 25, 2002

  9. Today we will be listening to part of the life story of Sr. Diana Ortiz, an Ursuline nun who volunteered during civil war in Guatemala; the part of the story we will share is Sr. Diana’s story of torture while she was in Guatemala. 

  10. The Ursuline Nuns, of Mount Saint Joseph, Kentucky, are an order founded by Saint Angela Merici in 1535.

Many of us here today have long been concerned about peace and justice in Latin America. My concern is amplified by the many constituents in my district of San Francisco who are Latin American immigrants. A full accounting of human rights violations in Latin American countries would help promote stability and lasting democracy for these important neighbors of the United States.
