I Was Wrong… • There are actually 3 kinds of people, not 2 (JCI-Nigeria Conference, Mesiogo 2004): 1’s, 0’s and the undefined • 0’s can grow into 1’s; 1’s can slip to 0’s if care is not taken; but start a pity party for the undefined • The decision is yours. School, teachers, missed opportunities, background, and other excuses are invalid • 1’s 0’s: Stop learning; bad company (they tell you you’re at your best); stagnant vision; excuses • 0’s 1’s: True assessment (you vs. YOU); drive for change (sometimes driven by circumstances); identifying direction of change; peer energy (P, N, R, G) • Undefined turns 0 at the point of admitting present state
Youth Today… • What are you learning in school? Are you a slave of the CPF model? • A significant percentage of youth will leave school as illiterates, not relevant for the industry, and not knowledgeable about the subjects/courses learnt • Unfortunately for some, work is being redefined – knowledge and technology are the new factors of production in the New Economy [video] • The difference between every two applicants (or interviewees) is not in grades or school logo, but intellectual capital and a reflection of relevance in the New Economy (economy, technology, culture, politics, life) • Competition has shifted from the classroom to the globe
eRevolution… • If anyone tells you that the world is changing, don’t believe such – the world has changed • In the next few years, the difference between you and your neighbour would be your response to the tools of the day and ability to master, manipulate and maximize technology offerings and opportunities • The move from queues to online tracking (UME), from postage to online submission (resumes for job openings) all show a growing trend… watch IT • In a world of competition, its about the survival of the fittest – the one who best fits the role (and you can bet what the roles would depend on in an age driven by technology and knowledge)
First among equals • With PEER Energy (“PNRG”), you’re on your way to being the first among your class of equals – pyramid example • Personal Development: There will be many excuses and distractions but you have a date with your future! • Nation Building: Citizens who love their nations and are willing to contribute their own quota to its development always live a hero’s life – accomplishing for self and more • Regional Cooperation: Drawing strength from others, you can weave a strong force of experts and/or enthusiasts • Global Participation: The size of your stage determines how far your visibility goes – think globally… • ICTs reduce the barriers of time and distance!
Youth, Take Action • ICTs empower every known career path – from accounting to zoology • What do you want to do with your life?Watch the signs! • Get a pen: What you love; hate; are better at; can do for free; are relaxed with… • How can ICTs improve your operations and/or what ICT skills do you need to acquire? • eMail / eNewsletter / Webzine • Online (re)search • Discussion Groups / Mailing lists • Online presence (websites, personal email address) • How do you pick up the skills? • Self-help (use the web and get a flash drive…) • Friends who know, before expensive training schools • Decide. Start now. Be persistent. Review. Stay relevant!
