Reading Rocks! Summer Reading Program “Reading is the only way we become good readers, develop a good writing style, an adequate vocabulary, advanced grammatical competence, and the only way we become good spellers”. (Kan, Katherine, Sizzling summer Reading Programs for Young Adults, 2nd ed. 2006).
Reading Rocks! Summer Reading Program:Lifelong Readers Are the Goal Reading just five books over the summer causes a 3% gain in reading comprehension (Kan, Katherine, Sizzling summer Reading Programs for Young Adults, 2nd ed. 2006). Reading Rocks! Summer Reading Program “My husband and I both work, leaving our 12 year old daughter home alone five days a week. Even though money is tight, we have never taken advantage of the school’s free summer lunch program because of the stigma attached. With the creation of Reading Rocks!, we will not only be sending our daughter for lunch at school, she will be able to walk to the library afterwards for free reading. We are very excited about the summer reading program.” Mother of Carrie B.
Reading Rocks! Summer Reading Program “If we had a summer reading program, I wouldn’t feel so lonely in the summer. Both my parents work, so I’m usually home by myself all day. If there was a reading program for me in the library, I would have somewhere to belong when school is out.” Carrie B.
Reading Rocks! Summer Reading Program • By developing strong reading skills, doors are opened for life long learning. • This program is a collaboration between the school and public libraries, both working to better the lives of students. • Summer reading lessens the reading gap for disadvantaged youth. • Outside access to books encourages positive reading practices.
Reading Rocks! Summer Reading Program • Good things can happen, not only for our libraries, but for the community as a whole. • If we invest in our youth now, they will become active members of our community in the future. • If we can gain access to kids, we gain access to their parents and can open their eyes to all our libraries have to offer them, as well.
Reading Rocks! Summer Reading Program • In order to facilitate a change in the culture of our community, we need your help.
