  1. Controlling Pop-ups & PUPs • Pop-ups occur when your browser is running. • PUPs (Potentially Unwanted Programs) may start when your computer starts.

Controlling Pop-ups in IE • Under Tools, Pop-up blocker– set it on • Under Settings, check “Allowed Sites” for unwanted websites • Under Tools, Internet Options • Security tab – Restricted Sites, • Click Sites button, select site, click Add. • Content tab – Content Advisor • Under “Approved websites”, list unwanted website & set to “Never” • Can set all content sliders to “Unrestricted”

  3. Controlling Pop-ups in Firefox Under Tools, Options: • Under Content, check “Block Pop-up windows” • Click the Exceptions button, look for unwanted sites. • Under Security, check “Warn me when sites try to install add-ons” • Click the Exceptions button, look for unwanted sites.

  4. Controlling PUPs • Control startup programs with Windows Defender. • Click Tools, Software Explorer. • Click the “Show for all users” button. • Programs are listed by publisher. • Click “Disable” for the unwanted program. • Reboot your computer & make sure it still functions OK. If so, remove the PUP.

  5. Controlling PUPs • Control startup programs with msconfig.exe • Click Start, Run. Open “msconfig”. • Under the Startup tab, clear the check box next to the unwanted program. • Not recommended as permanent solution. • Autoruns 9.56 from filehippo.com lists startup programs.
