Our beliefs about Practice Development • Transforming care and services so that they are person-centered, safer and more effective • Ensuring best evidence and research informs everyday practice • Enabling people to flourish • Creating good places to work
Our aim is to “Develop transformative partnerships that demonstrates excellence in academic and professional practice thereby enriching the individuals, teams, organisations and communities we serve” (Jackson and Webster 2011)

What do we mean by Practice Development? Practice Development is • “a continuous process of developing person-centred cultures. It is enabled by facilitators who authentically engage with individuals and teams to blend personal qualities and creative imagination with practice skills and practice wisdom. The learning that occurs brings about transformations of individual and team practices. This is sustained by embedding both processes and outcomes in corporate strategy”. Key activities • Joint appointment • Positioned strategically- influence and bigger picture view • Works at micro, mesoand macro levels • Enhance rigour and quality of key projects and initiatives • Embed PD within Nursing Midwifery and AHP Strategy and test a new theoretical model • Establish locally and nationally innovative projects that will lead to bigger Trust wide application and/or development of research opportunities • Grow skilled enablers or facilitators to develop a ‘can do’ culture • Develop active learning/ work based learning culture • Provide new opportunities for CCCU to support WBL

Examples from ESHT Patient experience strategy (2012-3) • Short time scale with a ‘must do’ • Band 7 Therapist worked part time to co ordinate the strategy • Massive stakeholder consultation commenced • 8 core commitments Some key outcomes include: • Engagement with seldom heard groups • Genuine input and critique from service users which has changes look, content and priorities in the strategy • Working with service users to enable them to contribute to learning programmes for clinical leaders and managers • Focus on user stories and data and data from observations of practice • Challenged the patient experience team to examine their ways of working in the Trust • Paper on the strategy development submitted to an international peer reviewed journal Trust patient care documentation project (2011-13) • 2 years • 1 F/T nurse to facilitate and Prof as project lead • Action research approach with 10 cycles Some key outcomes include: • Practitioner led governance groups set up for divisions/hospitals and community services • Effective peer review introduced • Development of ICP documents for specialist services • Development of integrated core multi-professional documents (IPDs) for all adult, maternity and children’s services. • Service user input • Strong person-centred feature in adult IPD • Strong focus on communication, consent and capacity (commended by Regional Auditors) • A Trust based work based learning module on improving quality of documentation in practice with CCCU
