Needs and Requirement Needs: • Create a clothes dryer that reduces energy consumption. Requirements: • Utilizes solar energy. • Affordable. • Easy to operate.
Conceptual Options • Roof Coils Idea: The sun heats water running through photovoltaic coils on the roof, which supplies hot water for the home. Drawbacks: The amount of energy obtained by the photovoltaic coils might not heat the water enough to the desired temperature. It will also be problematic to have enough coils for the maximum volume of water needed by the house hold. • Sun Domes Idea: Domes on the roof focus sunlight into room to light the room. Drawbacks: Will not provide light at night-time. There are also aesthetic problems of the sun domes that might not attract consumers.
Conceptual Options (Cont.) • Solar Alarm Clock Idea: Window with blind that can be adjusted to focus a beam of sunlight on your face at a certain time. Drawbacks: This method could fail to wake up heavy sleepers. There are also time constraints of the efficiency of this method. • Solar Clothes Dryer Idea: Create a clothes dryer that spins via a spring driven hand crank and focuses sunlight to heat unit. Drawbacks: Drawbacks are minimal and lie mainly in the affordability and work efficiency of the design.
Solar Clothes Dryer How it works: • A hand-crank stretches a spring. • As the spring tightens it drives a gear. • The gear system spins the clothes on rods at a moderate speed while spinning a fan at the bottom at a fast speed. • A clear dome on top focuses heat from the sun onto the clothes to speed drying process.
Cost Analysis • One sheet of Acrylite plastic, plexi-glass, cost is $69.44. • Plexi-glass is used for the top because it is light weight with good impact strength: easy to lift and weather resistant. • It is transparent and it transmits 98% of visible light. • For one sheet of Aluminum from the cost is $22.11. • The aluminum will retain heat, and resist weathering.
