  1. Heartburn Treatment - How You Can Save! What is heartburn? The esophagus is the tube that connects your mouth to your stomach. It pushes the food downwards in a rhythmic fashion to the stomach for digestion. The stomach has enzymes and acids to digest the food. It has a special protective lining that saves it from the possible inflammation by acid. There is also a specialized area of circular muscles, known as Lower Esophageal Sphincter or LES located at the junction of the esophagus and stomach that prevents the food from entering back into the esophagus. If stomach acid and digestive juices happen to reflux back into the esophagus due to some reasons, like LES not being tight enough or opening too often, they can rise up into the esophagus, causing inflammation and damage to it as esophagus does not have a protective lining. This condition is known as heartburn, which is actually the symptom of GERD or gastroesophageal reflux disease, which is characterized by stomach acid refluxing into the esophagus. 7% of Americans are estimated to experience heartburn daily.[1] Complications of heartburn The pain of stomach acid reflux or heartburn can remain in the lower chest or radiate to the back of the throat, causing a sour taste in the throat. If ignored, repeated inflammation of the esophagus can result in ulcers and serious bleeding. What can cause you heartburn? Some carbonated beverages, alcohol, acidic juices such as grapefruit and pineapple, and caffeine can also cause you heartburn. Smoking and consuming high-fat food can also cause you heartburn. Home remedies for heartburn Maintaining a healthy weight can help in heartburn as excessive weight pushes up your stomach, increasing the risk of acid refluxing into the esophagus. Also, avoiding late meals or lying down after a meal, and quitting smoking and alcohol can be helpful. OTC medications for heartburn If your symptoms aren’t very frequent or severe, OTC medications such as antacids (Mylanta, Maalox, Rolaids) that neutralize stomach acid, H2RAs (cimetidine, famotidine, nizatidine) that reduce the production of stomach acid, proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) such as omeprazole and lansoprazole that block acid production, and bismuth subsalicylate (BSS) may work well. They have lower dosage levels and approved for short-term relief of minor discomfort. When you may need prescription medications Frequent, severe symptoms may be a sign of a more serious problem. if you continue to experience difficulty in swallowing, there is chronic shortness of breath, cough, dizziness, cold sweat or persistently sore throat even after making lifestyle changes or taking OTC medications, you may need prescription medications for heartburn. Your doctor may prescribe you heartburn medications, such as Nexium, Protonix, Dexilant, that are commonly used for the treatment of GERD, based on your specific medical condition. These prescription heartburn medications can provide you stronger relief from the symptoms.
