Open Educational Resources (OER) • Free and openly licensed,online educational materials that can be used for teaching, learning, research, and other purposes. • OERs include textbooks, streaming videos, full courses, online modules, podcasts and other types of audio. Why OER? • Avg. of $1200 a year • Performance & achievement affected by affordability/accessibility • Demand from students • OER movement • Provost’s goals • Sharing knowledge • Pedagogical innovation
OER grants for USC faculty • Increase faculty adoption of OER by integrating at least 1 OER into course • Lower cost of class materials for students • Partnered with the Center for Excellence in Teaching (CET) to provide course design and syllabi modification support • Participants attended a workshop, worked with librarians to find appropriate OER and met with CET instructional designers • Worked with faculty Spring and Summer for Fall courses
Results of grant program Cohort 1, Grant started July 2016, Implemented OER Spring 2017 • 4 faculty members selected: Business, International Relations, Music, Social Work Cohort 2 (current), Grant started July 2017, Implement Fall 2018 • 3 faculty members selected: Business, Occupational Therapy, Public Policy Grant information: http://libguides.usc.edu/oer/grant
