  2. Identify It • Can grow to 6 feet high • Course textured perennial grass • Large multi branched seed heads • Leaves are usually bright green and can have purple spots

  3. Where it Grows • Native to southern climates • Grows along roadways or other uncultivated open areas • Brought to U.S. from Mediterranean as a contaminant in crop seeds

  4. How its Dangerous • Cyanide is produced in leaves and stems • Inhibits body’s ability to produce oxygen • Young shoots have highest concentration of cyanide • Symptoms- • Rapid breathing • Convulsions • frequent urination and defecation • Death can occur in less than one hour

  5. Treatment • Supportive drug therapy can offset affects of less sever cyanide poisoning
