Brown was caught and executed. • He was an active supporter of the underground railroad. • Responsible for the cold blooded massacre of 5 settlers in a proslavery town. • He helped establish an organization to protect fugitive slaves from their captures.

Interesting Facts • It is also referred to as the "War Between the States" because it was fought between northern and southern states within the U.S. • South Carolina was the first state to separate, followed by Mississippi, Florida, Alabama and several others. • During the Civil War, glasses with colored lenses were used to treat disorders and illnesses. • Surgeons never washed their hands after an operation, because all of the blood was assumed to be the same.
