  2. Fielding Graduate University Education Leadership and Change (ELC) Doctoral Program The Experiences of Education Leadership and Change Scholar Practitioners: Learning through Participatory Action and Leadership with Communities in a Border State Facing Cross-Border Issues

  3. Fielding Graduate University Education, Leadership and Change Doctoral Program • Where students and faculty embrace the university’s mission of serving “a community of scholar-practitioners dedicated to transformational learning and social and ecological justice.”

Fielding Graduate University Education, Leadership and Change Doctoral Program • Many ELC students were challenged at the idea of going to Arizona after the signing of SB1070 and HB 2281 and chose to honor the suggested national boycott. Others felt that going to Arizona was the only way to learn and possibly effect change.

  5. ELC 2010 National Session • Clearly, holding this Session in Tucson with the recent immigration and ethnic studies policies of the State of Arizona provided us with the opportunity to pursue, implement and learn from the developments in Arizona and to affirm ELC’s core social and ecological justice values.

ELC 2010 National Session • This National Session provided our diverse ELC community with opportunities to… engage the issues and act directly and constructively. • Advance our skills as doctoral students • Learn about the research of our colleagues in the 13 Final Oral Reviews that are scheduled for National Session…and honor and celebrate our 25 graduates.

ELC 2010 National Session Thus, our Session was devoted to the following interrelated outcomes: • To provide opportunities for ELC students to progress toward the completion of their doctoral programs through sessions, workshops, interactions, presentations, dissertation committee meetings and other activities; 2. To celebrate the accomplishments of our students and particularly our graduates;

To provide specific and varied opportunities for ELC students and faculty to collaborate with each other and with our friends and colleagues outside of Fielding to practice active social justice strategies and policy advocacy particularly on the issues of immigration, ethnic studies and justice for all human beings; 4. To relate these practices to work on Knowledge Areas, comprehensives, concept papers, proposals and dissertations following our 2010 National Session;

To encourage ELC clusters to work on the issues discussed and pursued at National Session, particularly given the continuing policy debate and litigation on immigration, ethnic studies and other social justice issues at the state and local levels; and • Following National Session, the design of a debriefing on the National Session experience that will support a variety of student and faculty work and advocacy. Leadership for this session has come from many corners of our Fielding Community….

Fielding Graduate University Education, Leadership and Change Doctoral Program • ELC Equity Council Meeting • Three Nation Symposium: Voices of People who Live and Work in the borderlands”. • Residents of the borderlands shared their personal and professional concerns related to immigrant, and human rights issues stemming from recent Arizona laws; with reflections of current and historical events.

ELC 2010 National Session Invited Guests In accordance with the intent to learn from Arizonians, we invited other local academics and leaders from the community which included: Ruben Reyes, District Director for Congressman Raul Grijalva (http://grijalva.house.gov/), who called for the boycott of the State of Arizona in response to the passage of Arizona SB 1070 (http://www.azleg.gov/legtext/49leg/2r/bills/sb1070s.pdf). Mr. Reyes spoke about the Congressman’s position and his rational for taking it. There will be an opportunity for questions and answers.

  16. ELC 2010 National Session Invited Guests Cont. Roberto Dr. Cintli Rodriguez, U of A Professor and Frontline Activist • Thought provoking presentation tied to Meso-American History • Supports Tierra y Libertad Organization (TYLO) who promotes positive social change and resistance in the barrios where we live. Work of the organization is carried out through a multi-tier model of grassroots organizing and popular education that consists of four key programs: Barrio Sustainability Project, Freedom Summer, MAIZ, and the Migrant Rights Organizing Campaign!

  19. ELC Student and Faculty Participatory-Action Research ELC community were asked to participate in a research project to understand the experiences of ELC scholar practitioners learning through participatory action and leadership with communities in a border state facing cross-border issues.

  20. ELC Student and Faculty Participatory-Action Research This research project developed out of the community dialogue over the decision to keep National Session 2010 in Tucson. An online survey instrument was developed with five separate online discussion groups relating to immigration and other borderland issues because you are a member of the ELC community.

ELC Student and Faculty Participatory-Action Research • The Institutional Review Board of Fielding Graduate University retains the right to access the signed informed consent forms and study documents. There are no perceived risks to the participant. • The results of this survey will be shared at the conclusion of this research project.

ELC Research Network This participatory action research will examine how people justified their decision to attend National Session or honor the boycott; if the experiences in Tucson or through virtual participation altered the previous reasoning for their choice; and how the dialogue about social and ecological justice will influence their future actions.

  23. ELC Research Network Data will be gathered in three ways: two online surveys, online discussion groups and video interviews conducted at Westward Look Resort and via Skype. Participation in any or all stages of this research is voluntary.

ELC Research Network Five general topic areas relating to illegal immigration and other borderland issues have been identified for specific discussion in an online forum: • Borderland Human Rights Issues • Borderland Economic Issues • Borderland Policy Issues • Borderland Justice and Enforcement Issues • Borderland Environmental Issues

ELC Research Network • An ELC student researcher will monitor each group to ensure the discussion stays on topic and is appropriate. • Participation in any or all stages of this research is voluntary. There are no perceived risks to your participation and you may gain new understanding through reflecting on your experience.

ELC Research Network • All responses will be confidential as allowed by the communication or delivery method used. • The Institutional Review Board of Fielding Graduate University retains the right to access the signed informed consent forms and study documents. • The results of this research will be made available on FELIX in the fall.

Mitigating Social, Ecological and Economic Degradation www.puposefocusED.org Purpose Focused Alternative Learning Corporation was developed around the concept of creating synergies between committed and engaged people to implement sustainable change in their communities. This will be accomplished through Alternative Education in the Environmental Sciences, Advanced Transportation Technologies, Energy Farming and Renewable Energy sources that will promote environmental, social and economic justice.

Mitigating Social, Ecological and Economic Degradation www.humanityuniting.com Humanity Uniting was organized under Purpose Focused Alternative Learning, a non-profit organization to raise awareness and educate people across the Globe to develop community-based capacities that empower them to build, operate and maintain their own Integrative Technological Systems of Sustainability.

  30. Mitigating Social, Ecological and Economic Degradation Humanity Uniting is a global outreach movement. The Humanity Uniting Team includes experts in Energy Farming, Renewable Energy, Education, Technology Integration and Social Programs. Our goal is to conduct annual education and outreach workshops, technology conferences, and concerts to the four corners of the Globe.
