  1. Cameron Hjeltness ROLE OF REVERSE ENGINEERINGIN AN INTRODUCTORY CAD COURSE Context: • This project was a two-week effort by a solid-modeling class in the attempt to learn Reverse Engineering with parts from a Yamaha YZ250F engine. We used SolidWorks software. • Reverse engineering is the process by which a complex component is taken apart and analyzed in depth to discover the inner-workings and fabrication of individual elements that make up the system. It can add excitement and challenge to an introductory CAD course. Poster by: Results: Process: • A faithful reproduction of the part(s) is the ultimate outcome. Compare the rendering at the top with the digital photo in the middle of the poster. • By thoughtfully following this process, a shop-ready engineering drawing can be created that captures understanding how the part functions and how it was made. • In order to understand the system fully, dissection and inspection of every component is necessary. This is fun! • Documentation of all findings should be compiled in a manner that reveals the function(s) of each element and feature (position, dimensioning, and constraints/relations). This is hard! Lessons: • The initial hand sketch can be very insightful. It helps you visualize modeling methods that you wish you had seen in the first place, dramatically increasing efficiency in second and third modeling efforts. Iteration is natural but it can be frustrating. • Looks alone are not enough to conclude how the part ought to be constructed. You can gain a lot of information by thinking about what the part needs to do and what relationships need to exist among the design features. • It is best to select a set of meaningful datums and then take more measurements than you think you need. Otherwise, you will find yourself going back to the part multiple times to get everything. This interrupts valuable work at the keyboard.
