Interesting Facts: • He was a free black • Son of an ex-slave, Robert • Mother was half English, half ex-slave • Grandmother was white • He was largely self-educated in astronomy and mathematics • He was a writer of Almanacs • He was appointed to the District of Columbia Commission by George Washington

  4. Almanacs: • Six consecutive years between 1792 and 1797 • Included astronomical calculations, opinion pieces, literature, medical, and tidal information • Also published information on bees and the 17-year Locusts

  5. Inventions: • Invented the first wooden clock in the colonies • Along with Andrew Ellicott, he mapped out Washington, DC
