  2. Aphrodite • Goddess of love, beauty, and sexuality • Born of the Sea from the blood of Ouranos’ genitals. • Married unhappily to Hephaestus and constantly cheated on him.

Adonis • Son of Myrrha and King of Cyprus • Cinyras kills himself while Myrrha is turned into a Myrrh tree. • Aphrodite find him as a baby and puts him in a box and gives him to Persephone • When he grows up Aphrodite comes back for him • Zeus decides that Adonis will spend 1/3 of the year with Aphrodite, 1/3 of the year with Persephone, and a 1/3 the year with who ever he wants. He chooses Aphrodite.

Aphrodite & Adonis • Aphrodite takes up hunting just so she can be with Adonis. • They spend every waking hour with one another • Aphrodite begins to neglect her duties and has to leave Adonis • Aphrodite warns him not to attack an animal who shows no fear, doubting her he forgets her warning.

Adonis & Aphrodite • Adonis finds an enormous wild boar • The boar is the god Ares, a lover of Aphrodite who was jealous because of her clinging to Adonis. • Adonis is castrated by the boar, and dies from a loss of blood • Aphrodite rushes back to him, but she is too late to save him and can only mourn

  6. Aphrodite & Adonis • Wherever Adonis' blood lands, Aphrodite makes anemones grow in his memory. • Every year there will be a festival held in his honor. • Adonis goes back to the underworld • Aphrodite realizes that he is there, and rushes back to get him • Zeus decides that he will spend 6 months with Aphrodite and 6 months with Persephone
