WWW • World Wide Web • A collection of text and media files stored for access via the Internet
Hyperlink • Links to another page or part of the internet • Can be any part of the screen, not just words • Text • Picture • Icon • Blue, underlined words
Http: • Set of standards used by computers to move and store files on the Internet
HTML • Hyper Text Markup Language • The standard computer programming language that formats internet pages • <title>
Web Pages • A collection of information made using HTML • Can contain text, forms, photos, video, & sound
Web Browser • Software that is used to view and interact with files on the Internet • Example: Internet Explorer, Netscape, Safari, Firefox, Chrome
Download • Transfer files from the Internet to your personal computer • You need to be careful about downloading viruses with the files
Domain Name • Official name of an Internet site that uses words and phrases to identify and locate computers on the Internet • The domain name must be unique • No websites can have the same domain name • Letters after the dot designate which type of website
Extensions • .com – commercial (businesses) • .edu – educational (schools) • .org – non-profit • .net – network • .mil – military • .gov – government
URL • Uniform Resource Locator • Standard web address and it must have two parts • Http • Domain name • 1) Http:// - type of language • 2) www – gets onto the world wide web • 3) google – domain name (unique!) • 4) .com – type of website
Homepage • Main web page • Starting point of a website that gives links to different parts of the site
Search Engine • Software that creates indexes of Internet sites based on keywords or full text • The more specific your key words, the better results you will get • Example: Google, Yahoo
Key Words • Specific words used in a search that help limit the number of matches
Bookmark • Allows you save a web page for future reference
Netiquette • Informal rules on the Internet • Code of Conduct: Remember the human! • Example: Don’t be rude (writing in all capital letters = shouting/angry)
FAQ • Frequently Asked Questions • Put on web pages to help visitors get quick answers
Chat • Interactive messages • Online conversations in real time
Forum • Community Bulletin Boards • Usually on a particular subject (technology, cooking, cars) • Members can read and post questions and comments • Blogs
Safety Tips • Don’t reveal your full name, phone #, age, or address while online
Email • Messages sent from one user to another via a network • Communication takes time, not instant like a chat
Attachments • Files that are added to an email • Can be documents, pictures, video
