Research policy: Main challenges • Characteristics: developmental trends • Research and technology are becoming increasingly complex, creating insecurity and unpredictability • Technology and society are becoming more intertwined Need for greater ability to cope with transdisciplinary challenges Need for a more open dialogue with society about research and technology

How to close the gap between research and society? • From PUST (public understanding of science and technology) to a mutual understanding between research and society • Precondition for developing robust societal knowledge • Need to engage the ”citizen” of researchers: • a profound cultural shift is needed in science fields, their policy and technological uses and the assumption underpinning them

The way forward • Launch a debate in RCN about the synthesis report based on the 5 foresight studies • What type of consequences for funding mechanisms, evaluation, recruitment, management, culture etc. • Next phase: widening the perspective • Focus shift from technologies to other themes • Work on an European level • Nordic, ForSociety, EU/IPTS • Elaborate on dialogue based methods on a smaller scale: pilot projects within RCN • Stimulate/finance other research organisations to use foresight methods
