  1. The Standard International Energy Product Classification (SIEC) and its relationship with the Central Product Classification (CPC)

  2. What is SIEC • SIEC – Standard International Energy Classification – the first internationally agreed classification of energy products • Integral part of the International Recommendations for Energy Statistics (IRES) • Clarifies long-used concepts and terminology within the energy statistics community

  3. Challenges in matching CPC and SIEC • CPC and SIEC differ significantly in concepts and structure – leading to a high number of split links in the correspondence table. • CPC is a multipurpose classification of all products • Largely built upon and influenced by the Harmonized System • SIEC developed to serve the current needs of energy statisticians • Builds and expands on currently (and historically) used concepts and terminology within the field of energy statistics

  4. The present document • Attempts to summarize similarities and differences between CPC and SIEC. • Attempts to achieve better correspondences by defining alternative categories by aggregation. • These aggregations are intended to be illustrative, without making any specific recommendation. • The focus is on the conversion of data from SIEC to CPC

  5. Questions • Is the creation of an alternative aggregation for energy products useful? • Could CPC be further developed in the area of energy products, to better serve the needs of energy statisticans? • Could SIEC be further developed to improve comparability with CPC?
