  2. STEAM Rising: New Standards in K-12 Learning The US is facing a crisis in its education system. Our standardized test-based approach is leaving new generations of American students at a disadvantage in a global economy that requires 21st century skills like innovation, curiosity and critical-thinking. The emphasis on science, technology, engineering, art and math (STEAM) and project-based learning (PBL) to close the gap has grown in success in several schools and school districts across the country. Meet our panel of educators and administrators that have developed successful STE(A)M programs at their respective schools.

Patty Quinones Executive Director, Innovation Programs - St. Vrain Valley School District Former Principal at Skyline High School (5 years) Race to the Top grant recipient ($16.6 mil) i3 (Investing in Innovation) grant recipient ($3.6 mil) Co-Director of Colorado Collaborative for Girls in STEM ASEE HS and Higher Education(CU) Partnership winner 2012 Patty Quiñones spent five years leading change at Skyline High School creating the STEM Academy & Visual Performing Arts Academy as a focus school for St. Vrain. She was asked a year ago to direct the Race to the Top grant programs. The transition to her new post, Executive Director will allow her to impact 11 schools in the Skyline feeder.
