  3. PURPOSE • To provide general information about planning for middle and high school • To begin the planning process for students and their families • To explain some of the changes that will affect students in the future

  7. Success In The Future Requires Planning Preparation for high school success and rigor requires students to • take rigorous middle school courses • develop meaningful goals • learn and utilize strong study skills

  8. College & Career Readiness • NEISD has an initiative to ensure that after high school, all students are prepared to enter • A four-year college or university • A junior or community college • A trade or technical school • The military or • The workforce Taking rigorous courses in middle school prepares students for college and career course work in high school. Students wishing to rank in the Top 10% of their high school class need to pursue rigorous academic courses to prepare for high school.

Pre-AP Courses • In 6th grade Pre-AP courses are offered for English, Reading (ACL), and Math. • Any student may enroll in these classes, but it is strongly advised that you use your teachers’ recommendations. • Think carefully:Courses have a faster pace and may require more preparation. You will be required to do more work outside of class.

  13. The Three-Year Plan • Is a working document that can change • Planning courses for 6th, 7th and 8th grade • Is to be reviewed annually & revised as needed • Assists with tracking preparation for high school • Assists in planning for college & career choices

Advanced options are available for all classes highlighted in yellow. \ One semester of Health must be taken. Four semesters of PE or athletics must be taken over the three years of middle school.   18. Physical Education / Health • All 6th graders are required to take a year of P.E. . • Health class is also required for one semester.

  19. Athletics 7th & 8th Grade BOYS: football, basketball, track, golf, tennis GIRLS: volleyball, basketball, track, golf, tennis **Athletics is a one year commitment. You must have a current physical. * Teacher recommendation and signed commitment form are required.

  20. BAND ALL OF THESE ARE FULL YEAR. CHOIR

  21. Orchestra Students will learn to play stringed instruments such as violin, cello, viola and string bass. There are beginner and intermediate orchestras for 6th graders.

  22. BAND • Students and parents must meet with band directors to determine which instrument the student will play. • Students will also have to participate in concerts and contests after school. • Band Auditions will be held 1st week in April 2013.

  23. CHOIR Students will sing, learn to sight-read and learn proper vocal techniques.

  24. SEMESTER ELECTIVES • Art • Choir • Music Appreciation • Theater Arts

  25. FINE ARTS THEATRE ARTS

  26. Art Activities include drawing, painting, sculpture and ceramics.

  27. MUSIC APPRECIATION • Introductory course which allows students to study music. • It does not have a required public performance component.

  28. Theater Arts This class emphasizes acting and dramatics.

  30. Electives In 6th grade you have one period for an elective. You may choose one all-year elective: Band, Orchestra, Choir -OR- You may choose two half-year electives: Art, Theater Arts, Choir, Music Appreciation Choose your electives with care. We are unable to make changes in your electives.

  31. STAAR Students who have not passed a portion of the STAAR test will be assigned to a workshop class designed to reinforce STAAR skills instead of an elective.

  32. PROMOTION POLICY To pass the 6th grade you must: • Pass English • Pass Reading • Pass Math • Pass Science • Pass Social Studies Overall average of all classes = 70

  33. DEFENDER’S Camp Incoming 6th grade students will: • Meet the sixth grade teachers • Receive an orientation of Driscoll • School Tours • Lockers • Cafeteria procedures • Opportunity to purchase Driscoll gear & PE uniforms • Usually held the week before school begins in the fall.
