How do I get my students to revise? Students need a strong background in the writing process and 6 traits of writing in order to be successful in the revising process
The Writing Process • Prewriting • Drafting • Revising • Editing • Publishing
Practice, Practice, Practice • Students need PLENTY of practice with 6 traits before revising • Teach the 6 traits- mini lessons • Model examples of revising drafts *examples at end of the packet
Revising • Revise after first draft- helpful if students skip lines on their rough draft • Choose focus traits- not all 6 traits • I mainly use organization, ideas, word choice, and sentence fluency • Can be used with all types of writing
Revising • Students work in groups of 4 • Each student acts as an “expert” for one of the traits • Colors are designated to each “expert” • Students rotate each others’ papers and highlight • Students may also make suggestions to their peers
Name: __________________________________________ Writing Genre: ___Narrative Writing________ • Color code Peer’s name • Word Choice Look for words to change into “better” words ___________ Organization Beginning, Middle, and End format; Transitions _________ Sentence Fluency Correct Run-ons and Fragments _________ Ideas Setting and Reactions should be recognized _________ *All areas must be revised by a peer. I’m looking for plenty of color in your drafts!
Name: __________________________________________ Writing Genre: ___Persuasive Writing________ • Color code Peer’s name • Word Choice Look for words to change into “better” words ___________ Organization Transitions & Support _________ Sentence Fluency Correct Run-ons, Fragments, confusing sentences_________ Ideas Thesis statement, arguments, restatement_________ *All areas must be revised by a peer.
