  4. DBT and Word Part 1: SWIFT • SWIFT is a Word Add-In that automates some integration with DBT and other braille-related tasks. • For US use, it offers little more than a convenient bridge from Word to DBT.

DBT and Word Part 2: Templates • BANA Templates, developed by Susan Christensen, are included with DBT. • Text layout mimics braille formats. • Style names reflect BANA categorizations. • Some styles must be specified as single-level or multi-level. • All text should be tagged with some style from the template.

  6. Which Word for Me?(Word 2003) • Word 2003 uses menus and toolbars(Duxbury supports these very well.) • Word 2003 can read, modify, and save .docx files, with a free downloadable add-in.(Search for .docx Word 2003) • (Word 2000 may not be supported by Duxbury in the near future)

  9. Which Word for Me?(Word 2007 and Word 2010) • Word 2007/2010 uses the “Fluent Ribbon”(Duxbury doesn’t yet support this well.) • One key feature is hard to find in Word 2007/2010. • “Fluent Ribbon” support from Duxbury is in development.

  13. Installation • First, install DBT and Word • You can install these in either order • When DBT is run, it will prompt you to install: • SWIFT • BANA Templates • French Templates too • DBT prompts about updating and “downdating” too. • Each computer user is prompted separately

Attaching a BANA Template • This step makes the BANA styles and toolbar available to you. • Procedure is important: • First, attach updating styles. • Next, attach (again) without updating styles. • Word 2003: Select Tools, Templates and Add-Ins. • Word 2007: The “Document Template” function is in the Developer Tab. Use Office Menu, Word Options, Popular to show the Developer Tab. • Next SWIFT will make this simple.

Setting View Options • This step allows you to see the paragraph style name for each paragraph in your document. • Seeing the style names is important to be sure that the document is properly tagged. • Word 2003: View, Normal; set Tools, Options, View, Style Area Width to 1" • Word 2007: View, Draft; set Office Menu, Word Options, Advanced, Display, Style area pane width to 1" • Next SWIFT will make this simple.

  17. Embedded Mathematics • Support for Equation Editor built into Word 2007 and Word 2010 is limited • Support for MathType is much more extensive • Requires installation of MathType • Supports most *earlier* versions of Equation Editor • Includes support for matrices

  18. Tables • Direct support for simple embedded tables • Formatter chooses “best” format • You can override that choice • Use [l] and hard spaces to force formats • “Nested” tables are problematic

  19. File Formats • RTF files are not directly supported. Use Word to convert these. • SWIFT will prompt for RTF conversion. • Word 97 – Word 2010 native formats are directly supported. • Native format changed with Word 2007. • DBT’s importer was rewritten from scratch for Word 2007. • DBT will often import a Word 2007 file differently than the same file in the earlier format. • The Word 2007 importer is simpler, and will be better-maintained going forward.
