  4. Selection Process – How you got here • Step I: A list of those students who have completed three semester blocks in the 10th and 1th grades with a cumulative average of 3.5 or higher is prepared. • Step II: The list is submitted to the faculty who will check the names of those students with whom they are sufficiently acquainted to recommend consideration for membership. • Step III : Letters are sent to each student receiving a minimum of 8 faculty recommendations requesting that he/she fill out and return an activity sheet by the requested date.

  5. Selection Process – what’s next • Step IV: After reviewing the activity sheets the faculty in each department evaluates students who they know well in areas of leadership, service, and character. Department chairpersons hand to the NHS advisor their department’s tally of student scores in each area. (May 13-20) • Step V:After tabulation of the departments, students receiving a 3.0 or better average in the areas of leadership, service, and character are eligible for final review by the faculty council and principal.

  6. Selection Process – what’s next • Step VI: The activity form is reviewed by the faculty council which consists of five principal appointed members. Candidates receiving a majority vote of the faculty council should be inducted into the chapter. (May 23) • Step VII : Letters of notification are sent to all students who were under consideration. (May 24)

  7. Selection Criteria - Leadership • The student who receives a 3 should show evidence of leadership in the classroom as well as some form of leadership outside the classroom in sports, the arts, scouts, church, etc. • This does not necessarily mean that they have to hold an office or act as captain of a sports team since leadership takes many forms.
