  1. National Honor Society Maximizing Your Opportunity for Selection

  2. Steps in the Selection Process for National Honor Society • Student Application forms are available for those students in grades 10-12 who have a cumulative grade point average of 3.3 or above and have been in attendance at Smithville High School for a minimum of 1 semester. • Each form is evaluated and scored by members of the Faculty Advisory Committee. • A student can earn a maximum of 60 points. These points are earned in the areas of scholarship, leadership, service, and character. • Scores in all areas will be totaled and ranked in order from highest to lowest. • The faculty advisory committee then double checks the final scores and finalizes the cut-off score. • Final scores are seen only by the committee and are sealed thereafter.

  3. Scholarship * GPA will be filled in by the advisers, so please leave this section blank. * Scholarship points are earned by taking the GPA times 5. This will be tabulated by the selection committee.

  4. Leadership • Officer positions • Captain of a team • Leadership awards earned in organizations (such as Boy Scouts / Girl Scouts) • Church leadership • Editor of yearbook/newspaper • Committee chairperson • Leadership position at work General Rule: Include EVERYTHING. The committee will determine the point value of the activity when it reviews your form.

  5. Service • 8 hours of service = 1 point • Service includes volunteer activities in school, church, and/or community. • A maximum of 10 service points may be earned for service. General Rule: Include EVERYTHING. Remember that you MUST quantify the activity with a total number of hours. Do NOT use phrases such as “weekly,” “monthly,” or “ongoing.” You will NOT get credit for any activity that does not have a specific number of hours with it.

  6. Character • All staff members will consider the traits of honesty, attitude, responsibility, kindness, and work ethic. • Applicants will receive a character score from 1 to 10. That number is multiplied by 2 to get the overall character score.

  7. Final Notes • Your form must be typed for it to be considered. Feel free, however, to circle the years by hand. • Include sponsor names and phone numbers where indicated. A phone number is not needed for SHS teachers. • Applications must be printed and turned in to Mrs. Mertz or Mrs. Winterboer no later than 3 PM on the designated deadline. Absolutely no forms will be accepted after this time! • Questions? See Mrs. Mertz or Mrs. Winterboer
