  2. History of Marine Sciences at UNCW • Began as the Wrightsville Marine Bio-Medical Laboratory, 1965 (off-campus) • Institute of Marine Bio-Medical Research, 1973 • Center for Marine Science Research, mid-1980s

  3. History continued … • Moved to new facility on Masonboro Sound (75K sq. ft. and approx. 7 mi. from campus) • Renamed Center for Marine Science, 2000 • Projected expansion in 2004 (including a small library) • Focus on the fields of oceanography, coastal and wetland studies, marine biomedical and environmental physiology, and marine biotechnology and aquaculture

Graduate and Undergraduate Programs: Marine Biology, BS (ranked 5th nationally, Gourman Report) Biology, MS Marine Science, MS Marine Biology, MS and PhD (doctorate program initiated in 2003, one of three on East Coast) NURC, Aquarius (Key Largo, FL), NCNERR, NC Sea Grant, R/V Cape Fear History continued …

New Explorations, 2003 (goals) • Determine information needs of user group • Maintain and increase positive perceptions of library’s value in an information-rich environment • Promote library and librarians as viable primary resources for information-dependent projects (e.g. grants, papers, information and library management, etc.)

New Explorations, 2003 (goals) • Build relationships and make connections: prospect for new opportunities to partner with faculty and showcase library’s value • Educate about changes in information and library-related technologies • Learn about various topics being researched • Streamline library user services to promote through “repackaging”

REEAFS • Research Enrichment and Educational Assistance for Faculty and Students • Acronym and opportunity for repackaging, and a metaphor for expressing value • Why Reefs? • Coral reefs are the “rainforests of the sea” • Diverse, vital components of ocean ecosystems • Home of an estimated million different species of animal and plant life offering an unknown number of benefits to humans • Endangered by humans

Libraries • Libraries are “rainforests for learning” • Vital components of higher education and society • Diverse collections that nurture inquiry and the search for truth • Professionals that help you find and manage information quickly and efficiently • “Living Museums” reflecting thousands of years of history and cultures • Endangered by humans

Promoting REEAFS (8/03) • Regularly scheduled weekly office hours (1/03) • Graduate Computing Lab (visibility with students) • Provides opportunity to meet with faculty and students in their environment • what information needs does this group have and how can we meet those needs? • what services do we provide to meet or surpass needs of user group? • Introduction to administration/senior leadership

Promoting … • REEAFS brochure distributed to each faculty member and graduate student • Literature review assistance and other primary library services emphasized • Each service colorfully name-branded with concise annotation emphasizing value • Includes photograph of librarian for recognition and personalization • Inclusion of library resources link on CMS homepage

Short-Term Results/Conclusions • Awareness of library and expertise it can provide: • Literature assistance for faculty and graduates • immediate and long-term • Consultation on data management issues • Preservation of facility-produced documents • Potential digitization projects • Stronger collection development • Repackaging may have been the original goal, but now focuses on relationship-building through personalized service
