What is diabetes mellitus? • A chronic condition associated with abnormally high blood sugar • Results from either deficiency of or a resistance to insulin- a hormone produced by the pancreas whose function is to lower blood sugar.
Types of Diabetes Mellitus • Type 1: insulin dependent; juvenile on set • Type 2; adult on set diabetes; non-insulin dependant
Symptoms • The same for types one and two • excessive secretion of urine, thirst, weight loss, and tiredness
Treatment • Diet and physical activity • Insulin injections • Oral agents
Complications • Diabetic retinopathy: a leading cause of blindness and visual disability • Kidney failure • Heart disease • Diabetic neuropathy • Diabetic foot disease
Prevention • Moderate reduction in weight • Half an hour of walking daily • Balanced diet
