What is a Political Party? • political party- a group of people who seek to control government through the winning of elections and holding of public office.
What do Parties do in the US? • The two major parties are primarily election oriented, as opposed to principle or issue oriented. • Parties are coalitions, a union of members with diverse interests, who have come together to get their candidate elected.
Major Functions of Parties • Nominating Function • Informer/ Stimulator Function • Help people identify and deal with complex information
More Major Functions of Parties • Future Leader Function • Governmental Function • Help recruit future leaders by giving them experience and backing • Ex: Young Democrats, Young Republicans • Prioritize public policy and organize government • Watchdog Function
Partisanship Loyal Opposition • Democrats and Republicans have different ideologies (opposition) but are for (loyal to) the democratic process. • an inclination to favor one group or view or opinion over alternatives
