What will my child learn this year? • Three important skills: • Reading Critically • Writing Critically • Thinking Critically • Focus is on skills needed for ALL future classes at WMM and college
What will my child read? • An assortment of fiction and non-fiction: • Short Stories: Edgar Allan Poe • Novels: Night • Poetry: Robert Frost • Drama: Shakespeare • Non-fiction • By the end of the year, students will be comfortable reading and analyzing all types of written texts
How will my child be assessed? • Various methods of assessment will be used: • Writing, formal and informal • Tests • Quizzes • Projects, formal and informal • Classroom Participation • Homework
Participation Grading • Worth approximately 10 points per week based on 5 criteria: • with materials • actively participates • completes work • arrives to class on time • speaks in turn
Homework • Assigned and checked almost every day • 5 points per • Plays a role in quarterly grades • Difficulty for freshmen • Invaluable skill for rest of educational career
