Quotation Marks Herrera 08-09
When Do I Use Quotation Marks???? • Use in titles of short or minor works • Songs, short stories, essays, short poems, and one-act plays • Chapters in books, articles in newspapers, magazines, journals or other periodical publications; and episodes of television and radio series
Dialogue • Use commas to set off dialogue tags such as “he stated” or “she explained.”
Punctuation and Quotation Marks • Use a comma to introduce a quotation after a dialogue tag, an introductory phrase, or a dependent clause. Jem hollered, “ Stop being such a girl, Scout!” • To introduce a quotation using an independent clause, use a colon. Jem explained to Scout what he was going to buy with his money: “ I’m going to buy a real train with my money.”
Punctuation • Put punctuation within the quotation marks. Lidia yelled, “I’m hungry mom!” • Do not put punctuation within quotes when using parenthetical documentation. According to the government, “About two-thirds (over 60%) of Americans are overweight or obese” (U.S. Department of Health & Human Services).
Punctuation • Put a dash, question mark, or exclamation point within closing quotation marks when the punctuation applies to the quotation itself and outside when it applies to the whole sentence. Does Mrs. Herrera always say to her students, “You must stay focused”?
