  2. The soils • Sand • Silt • Clay

  3. Sand • Sand is a naturally occurring granular material composed of finely divided rock and mineral particles. • The study of individual grains can reveal much historical information as to the origin and kind of transport of the grain. •  Sandy soils are ideal for crops such as watermelons, peaches, and peanuts, and their excellent drainage characteristics make them suitable for intensive dairy farming.

  4. Silt • Silt is granular material of a size somewhere between sand and clay whose mineral origin is quartz and feldspar. • Silt may occur as a soil or as suspended sediment (also known as suspended load) in a surface water body. • It may also exist as soil deposited at the bottom of a water body.

  5. Clay • Clay minerals are typically formed over long periods of time by the gradual chemical weathering of rocks, usually silicate-bearing, by low concentrations of carbonic acid and other diluted solvents. • Clays are distinguished from other fine-grained soils by differences in size and mineralogy. •  When dry, clay becomes firm and when fired in a kiln, permanent physical and chemical changes occur. • These reactions, among other changes, cause the clay to be converted into a ceramic material. Because of these properties, clay is used for making pottery items, both utilitarian and decorative.

  6. Fun facts • Silt is used for many different things such as concrete and brick. • Sand is used for glass. • Clay is used for hundreds of things. It can be used in sculpture, to patch things, for tiles, to make walls, dishes, pots, and burners. It can also be used as a building material and a roofing material.
