What is research about? What is Research? Research is finding out what things you don’t know about. Research can be, using books to find out facts, using websites, do questionnaires and complete interviews. Also face to face asking a good question can also provide results. Like for an example : You could interview a Scientist to gather data about what they do in their work.
Primary Research • Primary Research is to do with all things primary or first hand, such as really important information including going out to a gallery or certain places to gather information. Interviewing people face to face with questions is also another way to gather information and can be a very personal, enjoyable experience.
QUESTIONNAIRE RESEARCH • Questionnaire Research is a method of primary research. It is asking people questions and they answer the question, like for example. • How long have you lived in Brighton? • This question will help me to learn how long the person has lived in Brighton and the answer may also lead on to other information. • Questionnaires may have been a useful way to collect information before we had the internet. • You can gather information from asking specific questions.
Visiting Galleries/Museums • Visiting Galleries and Museums is a good idea to go out for the day to collect information and see real things/objects from the past and how they were used. • In Galleries and Museums they have things from a long time ago like the start of caveman. They have many historical things still present that you can view. Galleries and museums are found in lots of different places and there are many across the UK and especially London, Portsmouth and Brighton! • Galleries and Museums can be a better way to research rather than on the internet. The internet can sometimes make mistakes and not be 100% true on the information that has been uploaded.
Secondary research • Secondary Research includes all things that are different from the Primary. Secondary research has different ways, for example; newspapers, books, website, radio, television and magazines. • Newspapers, radio , television and website can be seen everyday to find out what is happening in everyday life and in history too. It is a really helpful way for people get the data they need. The next two slides will give examples of secondary research.
Newspapers • Newspapers can be one of the best ways to gather information everyday. So they print newspapers everyday and have done for many years. • Newspapers were invented in 1447 about 565 years ago and still, in 2012 it never stops. It is still selling and updating people with information all over the world. • Newspapers sell about 6,580 daily. This figure could be rising too.
WEBSITE • You can access the internet and websites on a computer, a laptop, mobile phones and on games consoles that can connect to the internet. • The Internet is technology that has us all using it in different ways and for different things. The internet can be very useful for research on search engines called Google, Yahoo and MSN. You can use the internet to look at newspapers for free rather than than buying them then throwing them away afterwards. • Internet can be Good and Bad. • A good thing about it is, you can research everything you want to know and gather information. • some bad things about it are, it can always crashed or break down and is always updating every week, month or year. It can affect your work on the computer and can be at risk of having a virus to mess up your computer.
Qualitative • What is Qualitative research? • Qualitative is not using hard facts, it is more about estimating or people's views. • Like for an example: • I could go out and interview 100 people and when I start to right up my results I could say that, most people I questioned were over the age of 30. This is an estimate and not a fact as I didn’t ask their age but it is my opinion.
quantitative • What does quantitative mean? • Quantitative is the collection of data including numbers, facts and figures. I can remember what it means as it reminds me of maths. like for a example: • Make a bar graph and pie chart which will visually show, the height and weight of people. It can quickly show results using images. Pie Chart Bar Graph
demographic • What is Demographic? • Demographic includes the whole population. It helps to ‘group’ people in different categories; age, race gender etc...For example, the type of demographic you choose may affect the sales of your newly designed game and may increase profits. If you are trying to sell a fighting game to a demographic of mature ladies than you may find that your business is not doing so well and you need to match the interests of the correct demographic. • If you did do make a good game suited to all types of Demographic you will be selling your game very well all over world. • The population can drop down and rise everyday so be aware of changes in society.
psychographic • What is Psychographic? • Psychographic is the study of people’s personality, attitudes and their interests it really can be helpful to your work or research when trying to sell games. • For example; boy ‘s may like to play fighting games whilst most girls won't like it. Some girls prefer to play make up or fashion games but these will not be popular with boys. • You need to try and find a way of matching peoples psychographic interests to your game that you are creating. • People have different views and beliefs which make them individual.
geographic • Geographic is about our earth. It is the places you can go travelling around the world and it can give you brilliant ideas for making games and what sort of backgrounds you may want to include. • How I can find out about Geographic places? • An easy way to have a look at the world is to look up a place on the internet to see what different places look like. You could also book a flight to different countries to see for yourself and study, draw or take pictures of place s that influence you when making /designing games. • These are colourful images of different countries .
conclusion • So far I have made 13 slides about why research is so important, I realise that we do really need to do the research to find out everything we need to do before selling or making a game. • Research can help you learn new things you didn't know and can give you ideas of what you might want to include in your product.
