57 Counties With SSURGO Data 5 Counties with Compilation/Digitizing In Progress 5 Counties With Project Soil Surveys
Go to the Alabama FTP site to download the 10 digit county hydrologic unit file. Click on “watersheds”, “assessment”, and then “county_data”.
Individual county, 10 digit hydrologic unit files, are located in the “county_data” folder on the Alabama ftp site.
To download a file, right click on the file name and choose “Copy To Folder”.
Set the directory to f:\geodata\hydrologic_units, and then click “OK”.
Each zipped file contains 7 files that make up the shape file. Use WinZip to extract the files to f:\geodata\hydrologic_units. The files are named after the county, example: wbd10_a_al-bibb.shp
Note: The following procedure may not work in counties that have an excessive number of polygons per quadrangle – this is primarily those counties that have an out-of-date soil survey with more than 75 soil map units. In these cases the predominate soils will have to be estimated or contact Rick Zellmer at 334 887 4576 for assistance.
Open a test/practice customer or an existing customer in ToolKit and as a minimum, make sure the ortho imagery, soils and wbd10_a_al-countyname.shp are in the Table of Contents.
3a. – Click on Selection – then click Set Selectable Layers; In Set Selectable Layers box click Clear All then put a check by wbd10-cnty_a_al067 and close.
Wbd10cnty_a_alxxx County soils layer Use the “Browse” button to navigate to the desired directory 3c. – Use the Soils Map and Inventory tool to create a soils report for one hydrologic unit at a time Check the “Customer Information” box
3c. – Use the browse button to navigate to f:\geotdata\project_data\nrcs and then enter the file name, then Save and Ok. The file name can include the HU number or name
For the watershed assessment, you will enter the predominate soils making up at least 33% of the hydrologic unit.
Repeat step 4 for the remainder of the hydrologic units! Note: In trying to produce a soils report for all of the hydrologic units at onetime, I locked up ToolKits, and had to do a Ctrl-Alt-Delete to kill the process!! Save this ToolKit/ArcMap session by clicking on File – Save As and then give the template a name such as ws-assessment-soils
