What is an Air Mass? • An air mass is vast pool of air • Covers thousands of square kilometers • Has the same humidity and temperature characteristics over its horizontal extent • Air masses are classified based on the temperature and humidity at their source region
Classification • 4 zones representing latitude of formation • Equatorial (E) • Tropical (T) • Polar (P) • Arctic or Antarctic (A or AA) • Surface characteristics of source region • Maritime or Oceanic Surfaces (m)which create relatively humid air masses • Continental or Land Surfaces (c)which create relatively dry air masses
Air Masses over North America • Continental Polar (cP) • Originates over high latitude continents (about 60 degrees north) • Cold and dry • Continental Tropical (cT) • Originates over low latitude continents (about 30 north & south) • Warm and dry • Maritime Polar (mP) • Originates over mid to high latitude oceans. • Cool and moist • Maritime Tropical (mT) • Originates over the tropical oceans • Warm and moist
