Criticism • Identify - Facts • Description – What do I see? • Analysis/Critique – How is the work organized? • Interpretation – What is the artist saying? • Judgment/Response– Is this a successful work of art?
Identify & Describe • Should include: title, medium used, size, what you see (don’t make assumptions) • Make a list of all the things you see in the work • Meant to slow you down • Meant to make you study details before making a judgement • Must be objective
Analysis/Critique • Still collecting facts • List the way the artist has used the elements • Also note the elements are organized – Principles of Design
Respond/Interpret • Tell the meaning or mood of the work • Here you can make guesses • Your interpretation will be different from other people • Your interpretation will depend on your life experiences • Must be based on facts and clues from describing and analysis – REFERENCE THEM
