Militarism • Military control of the government; aggressive preparation for war • Example: Germany - ruled by Bismarck and Kaiser William- building up a strong army & navy- making plans for war with different countries • Schlieffen Plan- 2 way plan of attack in case of war with Russia, involved war with France as well. Why? Alliances. • All countries focused on building up their armies using conscription • (Conscription=like a draft- all young men are required to join the army for X # of years )
Alliances • Countries formed alliances with other countries to gain security and protect their own interest against frowning foreign powers England formed alliances with France & Russia • Triple Entente • Germany formed alliances with Austria-Hungary and Italy • Triple Alliance
Imperialism • The major countries of Europe during the 1800's made a major push for imperialism. • Imperialism: refers to the practice of extending political power, especially through the acquisition of conquered territory • This led to a push/pull between the countries and a struggle for power.
Nationalism • Had been building throughout Europe for the last century • Austria-Hungary: ethnic groups pushing for independence and self-rule • In the Balkans: Serbs wanted to create an independent Serbian state combining all Serbian people. This included parts of Austria-Hungary
Assassination • June 1914. Bosnia. The archduke of Austria, Francis Ferdinand, is touring the empire. • A Serbian group, the Black Hand, to show their displeasure at Austria-Hungary's refusal to release Bosnia to Serbs so it can be used to form the united • Serbian country, decides to assassinate the archduke • 1st attempt fails • 2nd attempt succeeds
Consequences • Austria-Hungary declares war on Serbia • This triggers a series of alliances being brought into play, and military plans being implemented.
Result The First World War begins.
