“My Papa’s Waltz” A poem by Theodore Roethke
Remembered Feelings Think of a time when you were little and you felt something intensely. Something may have frightened you or made you so happy you thought you might burst. You may have just been handed a puppy or have gotten lost in a supermarket.
Questions What about this experience do you still remember? Where were you? What were you doing? What were you wearing? Who was with you? What colors or sounds are still real to you? What else do you remember?
Quickwrite: Now, think about how you can tell about that experience and express those feelings in words. Jot down some details that will convey the experience and the feelings—but don’t name the feelings.
Memory Poems Based on “My Papa’s Waltz” By Theodore Roethke Intense moments—when we feel very happy or extremely sad, triumphant or defeated—are probably captured in poetry more effectively than in any other form of writing. Use your quickwrite notes or make notes about some other moment that seems right and turn them into a poem. You may open with “I remember ________.”
