What is open source? • Open source software allows users to use the software for free and be able to change it in any way they wish. • The source code is available for anyone to look at and change.

Closed source • Software can be free but closed source. • Closed source software stops you from making any changes to the software.

Advantages of open source • Cost – it is free! • Customizable – Can be set up however you want it • Modular – You can swap software in and out to your taste • Rapid updates – Bugs and improvements can be implemented by the community very quickly. • Less security problems – It is less of a target than main stream products.
Disadvantages of open source • It tends to be more difficult to use • You need to have some level of technical understanding • Not all open source software is good, for example • Video editing • Website authoring • You sometimes get “beta” code which means that it may not be stable.
Task • You are to write a email to your teacher saying whether you think the school should adopt open source software. • You need to decide if we • Use no open source • Suggest one or two which we could use • Completely go open source • You should give reasons for your suggestion. • You should sum up the advantages and disadvantages of your solution.
