Social Impacts of ICT BY Kathryn Spence
Positives • Use of social net-working sites enables people to communicate on a wider and more diverse scale. For example, businesses can hole meetings when members are in other parts of the country/world, thanks to things like Skype or Go to Meeting.
Positives • Also in communication, websites like Facebook, Twitter etc, have impacted the way we talk to each other. Like now instead of face to face communication, we now choose to use chat-rooms. As well as this, they have encouraged use of abbreviations in normal communication (e.g. LOL, ROFL etc.)
Positives • The use of IT has been essential in creating jobs around the world for many different people. Because of this we have been subject to a greater economic improvement, with more trade and more jobs resulting in more wages and more demand. Also, small businesses have been allowed to flourish. Jobs which include the use of ICT are Software designer, ICT technician, games designer and network manager.
Positives • There has been a surge in online shopping in the past few years, transactions over the internet appeal to people because they’re quick, easier and do not require transport (online shopping can be delivered to your door). Websites that offer this are ocado, Tesco direct and amazon.
Negatives • There are many negatives now in society due to ICT. • Viruses now infect computers and if they are not effectively got rid of, they can spread to other computers and destroy the workings of the computers.
Negatives • Due to the mass usage of Email, now companies send advertisements by Email, asking recipients to try new products and give “exclusive” offers. This often is counter productive as it infuriates people and normally people do not pay attention and delete Spam and Junk mail.
Negatives • Identity theft has become easier, with many preying on the old and incompetent. Fake sites use the same logos and the real websites and ask users to enter personal banking details, the criminals then use these details to steal amounts of money. It is incredibly difficult to track, monitor and catch these criminals. People have lost life savings due to identity theft.
Negatives • Socail networking sites have encouraged “CYBER- BULLYING” of
