Developing and Using Video Instruction in an Online Course By Sue B. Schou JSM 8-2-07
ADDIE Model of ISD • A – Analyze • D – Design • D – Develop • I – Implement • E – Evaluate
Analyze Phase • Students have adequate quantitative skills • Require College Algebra as pre/co-requisite • Students generally are computer literate • Reading for comprehension often inadequate • Study of high school seniors indicate only 35% are proficient readers (NAEP, 2005)
Design Phase • Reviewed the literature • Streaming video found successful in aiding student learning: increased retention and motivation (Choi & Johnson, 2005) • Looked at variety of online sites for ideas • Polya Math Center (University of Idaho)
Design Phase • Designed lessons including visual aids for video taping • Designed lesson notes for students to use for taking notes while watching the video instruction • Lesson notes were used as a motivator • Lesson notes also included written Minitab instructions and assignments
Purpose of Course • Develop student analytical skills • Develop student critical thinking skills • Develop tools for business decision making
Commercial Video • Against All Odds Series available for digital streaming…must buy digital license • Must be password protected • Use Video 1: What is Statistics? as motivator for course • All videos are linked within Moodle (course management tool) as resources for learning modules
Instructor Videos • Designed the instruction so it is by topic and short in length • Students have notes to fill in that coincide with the topics • Concept building • Demonstrations of how to work problems • Example video and notes here
How to Do Instructor Videos • Instructional Technology Resource Center • Used classroom designed for distance learning • ELMO • Make all materials very large font size • Digital camera and video editor such as Final Cut Pro
Minitab Instruction Videos • Students have written instructions for Minitab in their notes • Made a CD demonstrating how to use Minitab…simply a video screen capture with audio • SnagIt software and microphone • Example video and notes here
Breeze Presentations • Macromedia Breeze purchased by Adobe so now called Adobe Presenter • Software that allows any PowerPoint presentation to add audio then converts to a streaming format • Allows presentation of material in “lecture” format • Example Breeze presentation here
Podcasting • Have not used in online setting • Students do appreciate for traditional classes • Requires Ipod and microphone then about an hour in the office with your computer to upload to website • Adding video more time consuming
Student Comments • Like the ability to rewind the instructor and listen again!! • Use Breeze presentations and instructor videos for review for tests • Like taking notes with the videos…helps stay on task and then have worked problems for study aid
Overall Course Design • Two lessons per week introducing new concepts • Used applets when appropriate • Required learning projects to aid in application of newly learned concepts • Discussion: How to Lie With Statistics
