  1. What can EarthScope teach to make our E&O a success? • K-4 Teachers • Earth is dynamic • The Earth is old • The Earth is where I live • 5-8 Teachers • Measure changes in the Earth • Geoscience is a cool career • The rock record can be read (by me!) • 9-12 Teachers • Geology as an integrative science • Geology as a living science • "Life exists by geologic consent"

  2. K-4 Methods • Create/appoint Montana EarthScope outreach officer to liaise with Office of Public Instruction • Select "traveling earth scientist" to visit every school in state • Will have prepared lesson plans for follow-up • Have EarthScope movie • Will have book focusing on reading skills • Will have activity books • Will have series of simple projects students can complete for award • Measure of effectiveness to be determined

  3. 5-8 Methods • Leverage "traveling scientist" program • Incorporate traveling trunk technology • Develop an "Adopt a (young) scientist" program • Disseminate and schedule programs via teacher workshops; perhaps leverage off of Earth Science Week

  4. 9-12 Methods • Use Landsat images, stereo photos, and GIS to map plants; compare to geology • Use geology/geophysics to illustrate physical and chemical properties (e.g., reflection seismic, paint pigments, economic resources) • Develop workshop and internet/CD based materials for teachers and science curriculum distributors; evaluate effects qualitatively and quantitatively
