Find the SIMD rank for an area of interest using the interactive mapping software This tutorial provides a step-by-step guide showing how you can use the SIMD interactive mapping software to find the SIMD rank for an area of interest. It uses animated pictures of the website so that you can see exactly where to click and what to do. The tutorial pauses along the way so that after each step you can go off and repeat the action you have been shown on the SIMD website (www.scotland.gov.uk/simd). Click to Start

  2. Start by clicking on the ‘Interactive Mapping’ option

  4. If you have the Microsoft Silverlight software installed on your computer choose this option. If not, choose this one, it works in more or less the same way.

  5. Try it for yourself on the SIMD website (www.scotland.gov.uk/simd). Then click on ‘Continue’ to see the next stage. If you need to go back a step or back to the start click on the appropriate button below. Back one step Back to start Continue

  6. If you choose the HTML version your screen will look a little different to this but there will still be a box in which you can enter a postcode or location. You can type a postcode, a place name or a datazone code into the box but to get a ranking you need to enter a datazone code or a postcode.   8. The map will zoom in on the datazone you have chosen (or on the datazone containing the postcode you have entered). You need to scroll down the page to find out the SIMD rank of this datazone.

  9. This is the overall SIMD 2009 rank of the datazone containing the postcode ‘FK1 1SW’. A rank of 976 or lower means the datazone is one of the 15% most deprived in Scotland. We can also find the rankings for the individual domains.
