InfoSam2020 • Macro perspective • - Growing cost of health care world wide • Growing middle class in highly populated regions (India and China) facing “life style” diseases • Most investment into new technology is carried by industrial companies. The 10 largest pharmaceutical companies invested $30bill (sales $200bill) in 2002. Investment in medical instrumentation and new implants is about $4mill (sales $40bill). • Diagnostic and monitoring equipment stand for more than half of the instrumentation business. Therapeutic devices and implants is about 1/3, and laboratory equipment stand for the rest The main priority is improved productivity in health care. This will drive the development of new technology. 190404/KAI

InfoSam2020 • Possible strategy: • Enforce the collaboration between highly rated research groups at • the iet faculty and the medical faculty • Establish a research program on medical sensors in connection with • the planned nano technology initiative at NTNU • Create an incitement for combining the emerging biomechanical • research in cardiology, sports medicine, robotics, and prostheses. 190404/KAI
