A Review of Mammals: • All Mammals: Are warm blooded, Feed their young with milk, and have hair
Warm Blooded: • This means they have a high body temperature and it stays constant • Mammals can be active in cold weather because they are warm blooded
Feed with Milk • The mother gives milk to her young • They feed on this to grow big and strong • Nutrients for survival are found in milk
Hair • All mammals have hair • Most of the body is covered this way • Like the hair on our heads
How can animals Live in the water? • Animals can live in the water because of something called adaptations What is an Adaptation? Click to find out!
ADAPTATIONS • This is when an animal makes an adjustment to its environment in order to make living there better or easier
Water mammals have many adaptations such as: • The Blowhole • This helps whale and dolphins breathe by coming to the surface of the water • Non-mammals, like fish don’t need these because they have gills
Water mammals have many adaptations such as: • Blubber • This helps keep water mammals warm in the chilly ocean and fresh waters. • Most have blubber and very thin hairs.
Water mammals have many adaptations such as: • Webbed feet or fins • This helps the water mammals to swim fast, like a fish • It works the same way of you put on a pair of fins to swim or scuba dive!

Seals • Are marine mammals • Live in shallow water near beaches • Have flippers and blubber • Can swim for long distances
Seal Eating Habits • Pups drink milk • Adults eat mostly fish • Seals might eat snow if their food supply is short!
Seal Communication • Seals make a barking sound • They may also clap the water or grunt
Whales • Largest of all water mammals • Have a streamlined body like a fish • Paddle shaped flippers • Breathe through a blowhole • Have blubber and hair for warmth
Whale Eating Habits • Whales eating habits range from plankton • Plankton are tiny floating fish like the photo to the right • To fish
Whale Communication • Extremely loud noises through the water • Make clicks with their tongues • Breathing through blowholes can also be a form
Dolphins • Smart water mammals • Live in shallow sea waters • Streamlined body for fast swimming • Breathe through a blowhole • Very intelligent
Dolphin Eating Habits • Dolphins eat mostly fish • Sometimes squid • Maybe other marine mammals as well
Dolphin Communication • Friendly • Live in groups • Good eyesight • Send sounds through the water to other dolphins
Sea Otters • Smallest marine mammal • Can walk on land • Have no blubber • Thick fur instead
Sea Otter Eating Habits • Hunts in short dives • Eats snails, calms, or fish • Has a pouch to store collected food
Sea Otter Communication • Forages, or hunts, alone • Social animals that live in groups • Coo, grunt, or hiss to communicate
Manatees • Also known as “sea cows” • Live in freshwater • Have paddle shaped tails
Manatee Eating Habits • Are herbivores, meaning they eat only plants • Use lip to gather food and then eat it • Mangrove leaves and algae
Manatee Communication • Use their lip • Have a wide range of sounds • Mother and calf have specialized sounds
