Research About Vocabulary • One of the best ways to learn a new word is to associate an image with it. • Students must encounter words in context more than once to learn them. • Direct vocabulary instruction works. • Students should discuss the terms they are learning. • Students should play with words. • Direct instruction on words that are critical to new content produces the most powerful learning. Let’s Do Some Strategies!!! A 6-Step Process Behind Your Head Fly Swatter Graphic organizers All can be used to explicitly teach and/or assess vocabulary.
A 6-Step Process – Robert Marzano Provide a description, explanation, or example of the new term. Ask students to restate the description, explanation, or example in their own words Ask students to construct a picture, symbol, or graphic representing the term. Engage students periodically in activities that help them add to their knowledge of the terms in their notebooks. Periodically ask students to discuss the terms with one another. Involve students periodically in games that allow them to play with the terms.
Steps 1-3 Using a Graphic Organizer Step 1: BLOG-a website that contains an on-line personal journal. Step 2: Take a minute to jot down the meaning of BLOG in your own words. Share with a colleague. Step 3: Take a minute to sketch a picture. Share with a colleague.
