  7. Camera Obscura • 1022 Ibin Alhazen first mentions the Camera Obscura in his Book of Optics.

  8. Camera Obscura • Means Dark Chamber (Latin) • Simple room to let in light to make drawings • Discovered 11th Century by Ibn al-Haytham (Persian) • Perfected by English scientist Robert Boyle in 1660s • Problem: need an artist, no film

  9. Camera Obscura • Allows artist to draw a figure on canvas to paint at a later time. • More realistic

  10. Camera Obscura • In 1490 Leonardo Da Vinci gave two clear descriptions of the camera obscura in his notebooks. He may have used one to paint his more realistic paintings.

  11. First Photo • In 1826 Joseph Niépce made the first permanent image using a chemical process. Titled View from the Window at Le Gras

  12. Daguerreotypes • In 1837 Louis Daguerre improved the photographic process using a mirrored plate and mercury.

  13. Matthew Brady • In 1861-1864 Matthew Brady documented the US Civil War for Harper’s Weekly and the US Government. His photo Harvest of Death brought the war home.

  14. Halftones • In 1880 The New York Daily News prints the first halftone image turning a photograph indo a series of dots that resemble the photo.

  15. Kodak Roll Film • In 1882 George Eastman invents the first roll film and an inexpensive camera - the Brownie.

  16. Press Camera • In 1900 Newspaper photographers are able to take more action photos in more conditions with a lighter camera called the Press Camera.

  17. Transmitting Photos • In 1921 AT&T begins transmitting photos via telegraph and later radio. Later the AP would take over as the top wire photo service.

  18. Leica 35 mm Camera • In 1925 Leica produces the first 35 mm film camera. This begins the “Golden Age” of photojournalism.

  19. Agfa First Color Film • In 1932 Agfa introduces the first color 35mm film

  20. LIFE Magazine • In 1936 LIFE Magazine begins publishing - first magazine devoted to photojournalism.

  21. First SLR Camera • In 1952 Asashi (Pentax) introduces Asashiflex SLR - allows photographer to look through the lens.

  22. First DSLR Camera • In 1999 Nikon introduces D1 - first Digital SLR camera. It cost $6000 and was 2.7 Megapixels.

  23. iPhone 3GS & iPhone 4 • In 2009 the iPhone 3GS introduced a 3.2 Megapixel camera and an easy direct connection to Flickr and other online service. In 2010, the iPhone 4 introduced a better camera.
