  2. 1. What is a fable? • A fable is a brief story that teaches a lesson or moral. The moral is usually stated at the end of the fable. • It often features animal characters. Moral: Slow and steady wins the race. The Tortoise and the Hare

  3. 2. What is a folk tale? • A folk tale features heroes, adventure, magic, and romance. • It often entertains while teaching a lesson. “Kindness pays off.” The Ant and the Dove

  4. 3. What is personification? • A type of figurative language in which a nonhuman subject is given human characteristics. The leaves danced in the wind.

  5. 4. Describe cause and effect. • A cause is an event, action, or feeling that produces a result. • The result is called an effect. Cause—Reason Effect—Result

  6. 5. In “The Tiger Who Would be King,” what causes the fight between the lion and the tiger? • The tiger claims that he is the king of the jungle. The lion needs to defend his position as king of the jungle.

  7. 6. What is the effect of the fight? • All the animals kill each other until only the wounded tiger remains.

  8. 7. What does the dove in “The Ant and the Dove” do for the ant? • The dove drops a twig so the ant does not drown.

  9. 8. How does this action save the ant? • By climbing onto the twig, the ant stays above the water and does not drown.

  10. 9. What is the end effect of the dove’s action in “The Ant and the Dove”? • The ant lives so it can save the dove.
